ENTRY TABLE STYLING WITH STRIPED PLEATED LAMPSHADES

ENTRY TABLE STYLING WITH STRIPED PLEATED LAMPSHADES

I'll start pulling out some Fall decor this week and next, but I recently fluffed up my foyer a bit with some new entry table styling and wanted to share with you before the pumpkins come out.  I shopped my house for the most part except for the one thing that made a huge difference... new striped pleated lamp shades!  All through the Summer I've had white lamps and accessories on the dresser, but when thinking about transitioning to Fall I wanted to warm it up a bit.  I haven't had my Tobacco Leaf lamps out in a white so I was ready to use those again.  Here they are as I've always used them- But I recently came across these striped shades and thought they might be perfect to mix with the lamps instead of the white shades!  I'm totally on board with the patterned, pleated shade trend but have not incorporated any into my home yet.  I absolutely love these mixed with my lamps!  It just transforms the entire look.    Green Striped Lampshade ......

HOW TO TEMPORARILY COVER A LAMP SHADE WITH FABRIC

HOW TO TEMPORARILY COVER A LAMP SHADE WITH FABRIC

I've been toying with the idea of adding a pair of lamps to my mantel for a while, I had some there years ago and loved the look.  On a recent trip to Homegoods I came across the perfect pair- they had a slim enough profile to fit on the mantle and were tall enough to add some height.  And, the bases look like bamboo and were already the perfect color!  These are probably technically buffet lamps, that's the term you would use to search for a similar shape and size.  Although the shade was a perfect crisp white, when I put them on the mantle the shade totally disappeared... they needed some oomph!  Since the shades were so nice and we all know I like to move things around a lot, I didn't want to do anything to them that would permanently damage the shade should I want it to be white again in a different spot.  I've covered shades with fabric in the past using hot glue but they were always old shades that I didn't care about using again in their original ......

DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2020

DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2020

I recently came across this article where Better Homes and Gardens lists what they think will be the biggest design trends in 2020.  Of the 8 trends that made their list, I already have 6 in my home!  I don't think that puts me in the "trend setter" category at all, rather I think all of these "trends" are actually design elements that have stood the test of time and are actually quite classic and timeless.  So I'd dare to say they're just coming to the forefront once again but in a new and fresh way.  ( *This post contains affiliate links, including Amazon.  As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. Read my  full disclosure policy here .) VELVET Velvet furniture is SO classic and although it might seem fussy, it's actually quite durable.  Today's velvets especially are made with fabric blends meant to stand up to family life full of snacks, pets, and lounging.  I couldn't be happier with the velvet I chose for our s......

DIY DYED PINK LAMP SHADE TUTORIAL

There's nothing I like better than a quick DIY project, especially if it's improving a good thrifted find!  I recently bought an old blue and white lamp from Facebook Marketplace.  When I looked at the listing I fully intended to replace the shade, but upon getting it home it was a nice silk shade and the shape really grew on me!  I shared a photo on my Instagram stories and my super colorful friend Camila suggested that I dye the shade pink... brilliant!  So, I've never done that before but I gave it a try and here's my dyed pink lamp shade tutorial. ...

25 STYLISH AND AFFORDABLE BATHROOM VANITY LIGHTS

I wanted to title this post "25 Bathroom Lights That Aren't Terrible"...  Why are stylish over the mirror vanity lights so hard to find?  Especially affordable ones?  As we're working to remodel both of the full bathrooms in our house, I've looked at plenty of light fixtures.  A friend was over the other day looking at the progress in the kids' bath and we both agreed that finding pretty vanity light fixtures is such a challenge!  So, I thought some of you might be in the same boat and would appreciate seeing some bathroom vanity lights that are attractive and won't break the bank in case yours are in need of an update. This pic is from their bathroom before the remodel- I didn't have a new pretty photo to post here yet! ;) ...

Welcome to My Five Favorites today! Pam from  Simple Details , Lisa from  Shine Your Light,  Kris from  Driven by Decor  and I are all so excited to share our five favorites in lighting with you today.  Even though it's basic purpose is functional, lighting is such a great opportunity to add style and personality to your home.  I'm looking around right now counting 6 light sources in my living room, not counting the built in lights.  Nothing else adds layers and atmosphere to a space like good lighting! We're so happy to have Sue from  The Zhush  guest hosting with us this month.  Sue has a discerning eye to curate beautiful rooms, and she doesn't shy away from using beautiful colors and mixing and matching patterns in her designs.   (*This post may contain affiliate links, read my  full disclosure policy here .) ...

BRASS PENDANT LIGHTS IN THE KITCHEN

Today I have a kitchen update to share with you.  I'm almost embarrassed to write this post... if you've been around a while you'll know that this is the fourth time I've changed out the pendant lights over the kitchen island since we moved some of the can lights and installed the original set five years ago.  I'm sure I've said it before, but I'm not a pro decorator.  I try things around my home all the time and if they don't end up working out, I learn a lesson from it and move on and try something different.  This is definitely a case of if at first you don't succeed, try, try again! ( *some affiliate links used in this post) Here's a little lighting recap if you don't remember.  I started out with thrifted  lantern fixtures , replaced those down the road with these lotus fixtures (which I LOVED but ultimately decided they were too small for the space), then repainted the lanterns (I experimented with red) and put them back up...t......

$20 BRASS CHANDELIER MAKEOVER

Hi there, friends!  I have been working extra hard to knock out my never-ending ORC to-do list.  I've hardly been on the computer or social media, so I'm feeling a little out of the loop!  Looking forward to catching up with everyone around the web soon.  I did want to check in today, though, with the details from a project I showed you a few weeks ago.  In my week 2 update for the One Room Challenge, I shared the chandelier in our room that we replaced the ceiling fan with.  I've always loved  Jenny's giant chandelier and looked for one for a long time, but never came across a similar one.  However, I finally came across this one and thought it might work.  ...

10 GREAT LAMPS UNDER $60, AND YOU'LL NEVER BELIEVE WHERE THEY'RE FROM!

I don't even remember what I was looking for, but recently I found myself on Walmart's website, and could not believe the stylish lamps that they had available.  And, I really couldn't believe the fantastic prices!  Many are from the Better Homes & Gardens line, I think that partnership was such a smart move on WM's part.  I picked out a few of my favorites, many of which are very similar to high dollar designer lamps.   ...

HOW TO USE LAMPS ON A MANTLE WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE AN OUTLET, & HOW TO HIDE THE CORDS

Hello Friends!  First of all, thank you SO much for your sweet response to Caleb's room !  You all are so kind, and I'm thankful to mark that room off of the list.  Secondly, I'm back from Haven and it was a ball!  You might have seen some of the fun on Instagram.  It was the perfect mix of new knowledge for the technical and aesthetic side of the blog, along with lots of time and opportunities for my "blog friends" to become "real" friends! Now that I've learned some new things, I have lots of work to do! Last week I posted a quick photo on Instagram of my mantle as part of the photo a day challenge for Haven, and a sweet friend asked how I hid the lamp cords.  I'm so glad she did, because it reminded me of this post that I've been meaning to share! I love to use lamps on the mantle, but I've never lived in a house with a mantle outlet, so I've figured out a few tricks.  Here's how I'm plugging in lamps on my mantle i......

CLEAN LIGHT FIXTURES {JUST ONE THING}

I'm enjoying sharing little things that are fast and easy to improve the space around you in my periodic "Just One Thing" series.  You can see a few other installments from the series here and here . If you follow me on Instagram , you caught a little glimpse of the cleaning rampage I was on yesterday.  It doesn't happen often enough, but when it does, watch out!  I focused on the kitchen and sprayed, wiped, vacuumed, and shined every inch!  Which leads us to my "Just One Thing" for this week... Clean your light fixtures! They're hard to get to and easy to overlook, but don't forget that they need a cleaning periodically too.  Yesterday I focused on the kitchen lanterns and the chandy in the breakfast nook.  I wiped them down with a swiffer cloth first to remove the dust and spiderwebs.  If your light has cloth shades, be sure to give them a good vacuuming off.  Then, if you have a fixture with prisms, there's not much more satisfying tha......

WHAT "WOOD" YOU DO? & A GOOD GOLD SPRAY PAINT

How does Sunday evening always get here so fast?  No matter how great my intentions are, I'm always sitting down around 9:30 on Sunday evening to write Monday morning's post.  Anyway, by the time you read this, Happy Monday Morning!  I started a project over the weekend that I need your help with.  I bought this lamp on clearance at Marshall's a few years ago (while we were out on a date for Valentine's Day...gotta love a husband who waits for you while you shop!) .  I love it except it had a white washed glaze on it that I wasn't too crazy about.   All I could think about was making it into something like this: Pottery Barn Doesn't the shape look similar to the one in the middle?  I stripped the finish off of the lamp and got it down to bare wood. Now, I'm not sure how to finish it off.  Does it need a light stain?  A coat of lemon oil?  Poly? Clear wax? Dark wax?  I just want that rustic, natural lo......

HOW WE MADE THE KITCHEN LANTERN PENDANTS WORK

HOW WE MADE THE KITCHEN LANTERN PENDANTS WORK

I've always wanted some additional statement lighting in our kitchen, but with the way our current lighting was configured it just wasn't going to work.  Today I'm sharing how we went about working around that and installing the new lights.  This turned in to quite a lengthy post, but I wanted to show our process in case anyone else has a similar problem.    We had great lighting, but our ceiling looked like swiss cheese...there were lots and lots of recessed can lights (22 altogether in our open kitchen/living/dining!).  The biggest problem in adding lighting over the island was that none of the current lighting was centered.  It was centered for the room as a whole, but the island is off center and none of the can lights were where they needed to be.  So, we knew that if we bit this project off it would not be quick and easy.   Thankfully, my soon-to-be-brother-in-law knows a thing or two about electrical work, and agree......
