HEKMAN BAMBOO HALL TABLE WITH STOOLS {CRAIGSLIST SCORE!}

I've had the itch to rearrange the furniture in the living room lately, but in order to do what I'd like I could really use a sofa table.  I sold the sofa table I used to have a while back, so I've been keeping an eye out for another one.  I came across this one on Craigslist over the weekend, and it was absolutely perfect!  It's a good height and length, narrow so it won't stick out too far, and the huge bonus is that it came with two darling stools!  We can never have too much extra seating around here.

I agonized as I waited for the seller to return my call, almost 24 hours later I finally heard back that it was still available (I secretly felt in my heart that this was mine all along, so I wasn't too worried, just impatient!).

The burled wood is gorgeous and I want to leave it as is.  The finish is pretty scratched up but I think I can fix that fairly easily.  I was cracking up when I shared this on Instagram, so many commenters said "I had curtains out of that fabric!" or "I had a sofa covered in that fabric!"

Well, that fabric is already history, as is the entire top of the stools.  In fact, I started ripping it apart so fast I realized half way through that I didn't even take decent before pictures other than these few I snapped on my phone.  The set came out of a smoker's house, so I opted to start over with everything including the foam underneath.  My IG friends had some good suggestions about treating the wood for the smoke smell, so I've been wiping it down multiple times with a vinegar and water mix or a Murphy's oil mix, and have been leaving it outside for days to air out.  I think it's working!

I'm going to try to polish the metal hoods on the casters to see if they're brass underneath the dull finish, too.  I think they might have been added from what the original design was, but I like the rolling factor so I'm going to leave them on.

I'm leaning towards using the piece of black and white buffalo check fabric that I bought for the bamboo bench I re-covered.  I ended up using palm fabric on that instead so I still have the check.  I think it would look great mixed with the wood, and bonus... it would match the bathroom!  ;)

I didn't know a brand or any information when I went to pick it up, but when I got it I found "Hekman, Lexington, NC" stamped inside a drawer.  After a little Google search I found this-the exact set- that had been listed at one time on 1st Dibs for $2750... TWO THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS!  I guess since I paid $2,690 less than that I made a pretty good investment, huh??

Stay tuned, I'm hoping to get this makeover done pretty quickly!

Did you see that I started a new Saturday post series last week?  I'll be back tomorrow with another Sweet Saturday post!

  2. Great find! Don't you love it when you score something you really love for a good deal and then find out it's worth much more? It's like winning the lottery or something. Can't wait to see what you do with the seat covers.

  3. We bought an antique dresser once that had a terrible smell. We tried all the tricks trying to get the odor out of the drawers and the inside of the dresser. Cleaning and letting the drawers sit out in the sun seems to help the most, but you could still smell some odor - AND - we bought this dresser for our own bedroom and wanted to be able to put clothing in it (with no stinky smells)! LOL My husband finally decided to clean everything once again (I think with mineral spirits) and sealed everything on the inside. He just used some type poly sealer. No more problems! Hopefully you won't need to do that - but just thought I'd tell you what we did - and that it worked.

  4. What a fun Craigslist find! I live in a suburb of Dallas, and I think the Craigslist scores here are few and far between. Either there's nothing good, it's too high end, or it's junk that people want to sell for full retail price. :/ I think buffalo check fabric would look nice.

  5. Luvly!!! The wood buried wood is so beautiful. We went to an estate sale a few months ago and scored a Hekman piece as well. Solid cherry with such detail. An occasional table with the cutest little brass feet. Original finish and hardware, for , wait for it.... $2.50. All because we bought a dining table, same era made by Henkel Harris.
I'd say we both scored big time!!!!

  12. Really great find. Howard's Restore a Finish should take care of the wood, once you have it sufficiently de-smoked. Your fabric will look wonderful on it.

  13. Well, that was quite a score!! These are really great pieces, and they'll look even better when you put your magic touch on them ;)

  14. What an AMAZING score....you make me want to scour Craigslist all weekend. Can't wait to see the end result. Beautiful....glad you are letting the beautiful wood show!

  15. I love black & white buffalo check. FYI-Hubby & I restored a vintage dresser that was pretty scratched up on the top. I used Old English Dark & it was amazing what a difference it made. I have found that Old English Dark works great even on lighter woods. Love that stuff! Your piece is beautiful-good score!

    1. My Dad taught me the Old English Dark trick years ago, and you're right! It's great for freshening up surfaces and blending in scratches! I think this piece needs something a little more substantial because the damage is heavier, but I definitely thought about using OE!

  17. This will sound funny, but I had success wiping with Windex and then spraying Febreeze all over and inside the drawers.

    1. Oh, that's interesting! Maybe the ammonia in the Windex? Maybe I'll try that, it's still not smelling that great...

  18. I absolutely love your score on Craigslist. I wanted to share with you a similar steal I found at my favorite local thrift store for a mere $50. Our two finds would really look great together. It is missing a some hardware so I'm going to look over the piece good to see if I can find a manufacturers name because I would love to replace the orginal hardware because the pulls on the drawers have dragon's heads on each end. Just thought you might enjoy seeing my find. Look your blog! -- Stacye

  21. Hi Jennifer. I'm looking for the article on how you transformed this piece. Can't find it. Please point me in the right direction. Thanks. Great find by the way!

  22. Hi Ann, I did not post a tutorial for this piece. I basically just sanded it down a bit and used gel stain to enhance the finish. I followed some tutorials found on pinterest to make the box cushions. Sorry I don't have anything more specific!
