LOOK FOR LESS: DESIGNER POM POM BASKET

DIY craft, pom pom basket, craft tutorial, how to make a pom pom

I've loved these designer pom pom baskets since I first laid eyes on them, but the designer price tag... not so much.  I even spotted one in one of my favorite House Beautiful home tours that I shared with you a few weeks ago (can you find it?).  I knew that it would be a simple project to replicate, but I had not seen the same style of basket.  On every trip to Homegoods or TJ Maxx I searched the basket aisle hoping to find something similar.   I was so surprised to stumble across the exact style as the inspiration basket at Ikea last week!  Maybe they've carried this style of basket for a while, but I only get to Ikea a few times a year and never noticed it until my last trip.  Hooray!

The very evening we returned home from our trip I was busy making pom poms.  It only takes a few minutes per pom, you can see my simple tutorial here.

At first I thought I'd hot glue the poms on, but them decided to tie them on in case I ever wanted to switch out the colors.  I left the piece of yarn that ties off the middle of the pom long, then carefully threaded it through the weave of the basket from the front.

Then I tied it off inside the basket and trimmed the ends.  Repeat for the number of poms that you want and you're all finished!

So for the $10 basket price and yarn I already had, I have a happy new basket.

I've been wanting to do this project for a long time, and was just waiting to stumble across the right basket to use.  In the mean time, my friend Jen did her own version... check it out here!

If you love pom poms as much as I do, here are a few other pom projects you might like:

I hope I'll see you back here on Friday.  I'll be sharing my Spring Tour, and you might spy where this little cutie ended up!  Until then, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the Spring Tours that are already in progress this week.

  2. I love the basket. I need to make a trip to Ikea too, it is quite a drive for me so I only get there a few times too. Thanks also for the tours shout out. They have been totally awesome so far.

    1. I'm not quite sure what you're asking...? What are you looking for?

    2. I would love to make this basket! Thanks for the inspiration! Since I live over 200 miles (and have to pay $20 in tolls, too), I am trying to find the basket online through IKEA. Did you keep your receipt so that we can know the item "name" or product number? Would love to avoid a 5 hour trip (not to mention the gas/tolls)!

    3. p.s. The nearest HomeGoods is over 200 miles away. My struggle is real when it comes to decorating in the boonies.

  4. It kills me that there is not an Ikea closer to me!! That basket is a dead ringer for the real thing. Looks so great, Jen, and thanks for the link!
