LATEST SECONDHAND FINDS

Happy Wednesday, I hope you all enjoyed the tour of The Merc yesterday!  I loved reading the comments from some of you who have visited, also.

I have a quick post for you today, I just wanted to share a few of the treasures I found this past week from several different places.  I'm glad that some of you have mentioned you enjoy seeing this kind of posts, I also like to see what others have scored secondhand as well.  It's so fun to see all of the unique items that people find (and the possibilities they see in someone else's "trash")!

First off, I saw this vintage brass peacock fireplace screen advertised on Craigslist.  It was in a booth at an antique mall that I hadn't been to before, so I was excited to check out a new-to-me place.  Not to mention, I've been on the lookout for one of these screens for a long time!  Usually, the size or price isn't right, or I don't like the decorative details.  Everything was just right about this one!

We've been moving our other screen back and forth between the indoor and outdoor fireplace, so I'm happy to have a pretty one for this space now.

I also found this pair of cute towel rings.  I need to freshen up the kids' bath one of these days and these will be perfect in a bright, glossy color.

And, this little hand dish.  Isn't it sweet?  It's Avon and fits in the palm of my hand.  I'm working to organize a little office space and this will be just right for holding paperclips.

Next, I stopped by an estate sale near my house on Saturday.  It was already late morning and the sale had already been running for a few days, so everything was half price... bonus!  I found so many good things that it really made me wonder what I had missed out on there!

I picked up a few great brass pieces- the small hinged-lid box was actually from the antique mall too, I just had them all grouped together for this photo.

Love these little blingy bobeches, even though they're just plastic they're cute!  I already had these sticks- they're actually my Mom's that I've never returned...sorry Mom ;)  I added a few more random hobnail tiny glasses to my collection, for $.25 each.

I generally use lots of glass and crystal bowls for serving when we're entertaining, and have plenty of larger ones, but needed some smaller ones for things like toppings, olives, etc.  The cute little candy dish came home with me too!

As soon as I walked in the kitchen I spotted these napkin rings, and only when I got close did I notice they were engraved with a G!! $2-Totally meant for me!  Looking forward to using these on a Valentine's table I'm working on.

My Mother-in-Law collects Ruby Red, and they had several pieces left.  I texted her photos of what they had, and she only needed these 4 little dipping bowls to complete her set.  I picked up a few other pieces too, but I'll keep those a secret since they will be a birthday surprise.  ;)

Lastly, I wanted to show you my latest Craigslist purchase...

La la la!!!  Angels are singing!  I've been looking for this style of chandelier for my dining room for a long time, and they just don't come across our CL much at all.  This one was from a nearby home that the new owners are renovating, and I guess this wasn't their style.  Good for me!  It wasn't a super bargain, but still a deal for a gorgeous vintage piece compared to what some new lighting can cost!  It needs a lot of cleaning up, and I have some plans to bling it out even a little more.  But first, we're going to have to lengthen the cord and chain to get it ready to install.  I've started taking it apart and hope to get it sparkling clean today and ready to hang soon.

I'm not sure if it's brass or not- it's more golden yellow than brass usually is and isn't tarnished at all.  I really don't know anything about it, if anyone does I'd love to hear it!

The current state of this corner of my living room... I can't even guess how many tiny little crystals there are! #sendhelp

Speaking of Craigslist, I'm working on a post sharing some of my tips for shopping on CL that I'll be sharing soon!  Several readers have asked about my favorite local thrift store and antique malls, so I'm putting together a list of all of those, too.

Have you found any unique bargains lately?

  1. Great finds. I especially love the napkin rings and that chandy. Amazing.

  2. Re: the candy dish in the photo with the two glass bowls. I have a candy dish identical to that (only it's much larger, and the lid is missing on mine). Mine was a wedding present my grandparents received somewhere around 1940 or so. :D Mine has no markings, so I don't know anything about it, who made it, etc. Does yours? I'm very curious.

  3. Jennifer, so many great finds, and that chandelier could not be more perfect for you! It reminds me of my Mom's Waterford Crystal one in the house I grew up in. It was one of the nicest things my Mom owned and she loved it. She would remove the strands of crystals and have me wash and dry them at the kitchen table right before the holidays every year. It was so tedious but then when she would put it all back together and turn the light on - just magical! Can't wait to see yours up!

  4. Jennifer, I've been wondering how you will "restring" your chandelier. I have one very similar from my husband's deceased aunt. Many of the "strings" have come undone. Are you going to try to reconnect everything yourself? I'll be watching to see how it goes. I'm not very patient so I may not do well restringing mine.

  5. You found so many wonderful things Jennifer! I have the same Avon hand. Honestly, it creeps me out a little bit. :) My latest "finds" are a set of golden peacock figurines and a couple of berry wall plaques, both by Syroco. My friends don't understand! I'm looking forward to seeing your chandelier in all its glory!

  7. Wow, you are good! Those little ruby glass bowls looks like a large one that I inherited from my late mother. I think that was the only piece she had, and it always held the potato salad or 5-cup salad (fruit and marshmallows!) when we had company. I keep it in one of my glass cabinets on a stand and it looks so beautiful when the light hits it.
Those napkin rings are quite a find, too.

  11. Gorgeous chandelier! Pure coincidence I was looking for ideas on pinterest on how to modernize a pair of crystal table lamps I found and I found a pin titled "The French Empire Crystal Chandelier" and they look almost identical to your find! Here is the link if you want to read up on it! https://houseappeal.wordpress.com/2013/01/15/crowned-magnificence-the-french-empire-crystal-chandelier/

  16. Love the chandy! I picked up an over the top antique brass one at an antique store in Texas. I replaced the white *candles* with bees wax ones which I ordered at a lighting store. You might want to think about that as well.

  17. The brass looks lacquered on your darling chandelier. It won't patina like the old unlacquered ones. I think there is a way to remove the lacquer. Lillian Strickler has required some of my more intricate crystal and brass chandeliers and I never regretted letting them do it. Beautiful finds!
