I have been so excited to try out FrogTape's® new Shape Tape! I have long been a fan of FrogTape® and the crisp lines that are a result of it's PaintBlock® Technology. You may think painter's tape is painter's tape, but this one is super scientific! PaintBlock® is a super-absorbent polymer that reacts with latex paint and instantly gels to form a barrier, sealing the edges of the tape. Sounds tricky, but it truly prevents paint bleeding and gives a perfectly clean edge! I have used the traditional FrogTape® for several projects, and have been so pleased and amazed at the fantastic results.
Recently, FrogTape® has come out with a new line of Shape Tapes. They are available in Chevron, Wave, or Scalloped patterns and open up a whole world of creative possibilities! I recently tried the Wave pattern on a project I've been wanting to do for a long time.
Immediately upon opening the container, there were a few things that I noticed that I really liked. First, the tape has a backing that is split down the middle for easy removal. It allows you to peel off half of the backing, get the tape positioned, and then peel off the rest and secure the tape. And second, there are register marks printed right on the tape, making lining it up if needed so much easier!
I've been wanting to do something fun with this ginger jar that I picked up a few months ago, and when I got the wave Shape Tape I knew this would be the perfect project for it! The tape would be great to use on walls or even for a cute detail on curtains or pillows, but I really liked how manageable it was on a curvy shape like this container. I'll show you how I transformed it in a few easy steps!
Step 1: You will probably want to prime your piece. I chose to prime to cover the design and so the paint would adhere well to the ceramic material. Lightly spray several coats to cover.
Step 2: Primer often leaves a gritty finish. When completely dry, use a fine sandpaper to lightly sand to a smooth finish, then spray with your base color. I chose glossy white.
Step 3: Begin applying the FrogTape® Shape Tape to achieve desired pattern. Since I was working with a curved shape and the tape didn't lay flat, I started with the top center of the wave and pressed to adhere that section first.
Step 4: Then, I slowly pressed from the center of the tape out toward the edge. Since it's on a curve, it will naturally crease together and I made sure that the edges of the folds were still lined up to create a continuous edge line.
Step 5: Go around all of the tape edges and press down very firmly with your finger. Make sure that all edges are adhered to your container well to ensure crisp lines.
Step 6: I added a design to the lid also by cutting some dots out of regular FrogTape®.
Step 7: Lightly spray with your desired color. Several light coats work best to prevent paint drips.
Step 8: Within about 10 minutes of spraying the final coat, begin peeling the tape off. Delight in the perfectly clean lines and crisp edges!
Step 9: Enjoy your beautiful finished product and tell everyone that you made it yourself!
