Do you like a good treasure hunt story?  I love knowing the details behind a good thrift purchase.  If you don't, I'll see you tomorrow.  :)

I'll try to make a long story shorter.  I was out thrifting sometime around New Year's.  I saw this chair and thought it was interesting.  The price was smudged, but it looked like it said $160.98 (everything at this store is 1/2 of what it's marked, but still...$80?  at a thrift store?  No.).  I asked a worker about it and he basically said, "Yeah, that's what it looks like, we normally don't price things that high. We'll do markdowns in a few weeks."  I left knowing that no one would be beating down the door for that one.

When I feel like I'm going out on a limb (for me) a little bit, I like to bounce things off of my sister.  I texted her the picture and she thought it was cool.  The next day she opened her Better Homes and Gardens and saw this...

I love confirmation like that!

About a week later I went back and the price was VERY clearly marked $160.98.  And, I left again.  I went back a bit later and the chair said "SOLD" with someone's name on it.  What?

My sister visited the same store a few days later and the chair was still sitting there.  She asked about it and they just said, "Yes, it's sold."

The next time I went in, the chair was still sitting there. I asked about it and said I'd really like to buy it. They said "Oh, that's Dave's chair.  He's supposed to pick it up on Sunday."  Ok, so they knew they guy that bought it, and probably sold it to him for like $20.  At least that's what I imagined.

I still couldn't get the chair out of my mind, so on Saturday, about a week later than the last time I saw it, in the middle of this,

I was driving by that store to go pick up my daughter from my parents' house.  She spent the night to avoid the motley crew of boys that took over our home for the weekend.  (We loved it!) Thankfully, the only casualties of the weekend were my paper whites...victims of a late night pillow fight.  That's o.k., they were on their last leg anyway.  I don't know how they missed, but I'm just glad they didn't get one of my favorite lamps!

OK, back from that rabbit trail!  Sooooo, since I was driving right by it, I couldn't resist swinging in to check on MY chair.  And lo and behold, it was there, with the "SOLD" wiped off, and a reasonable price on it ($89, which would make it $45.)  I had hoped to get it for a little less, but at this point I almost threw my money at them and carted it out.  2 people commented on it on the way out... "What a cool chair" and "I wish I would have seen that!"

It's really sturdy and in good shape. All it needs is a seat cusion, which should be simple enough.  I have the perfect little corner of my living room where I needed something after the Christmas tree moved out.  Over the last month of pining for this chair, I came across some great inspiration photos.

These are currently available from IKEA.  I considered getting one when I thought I had missed out on the other chair, but I like my $45 price tag much better than the $119 for these (although that's still a good price!).  I think the chair I showed you previously from BH&G looks a lot like the IKEA Storsele also.

A bright, glossy color might be fun...

My bamboo chair is waiting for it's new slipcover (which won't be done until March….I'm way down on the queue) and I can't wait for it to be done! I love a rattan or bamboo chair mixed in with upholstered pieces. Look forward to seeing this in your living room!

  3. love that chair! I've been eyeing the ones at IKEA for a while and going back and forth on the color - natural or black - natural or black. too bad those ones aren't $45! :)

  7. Seriously, aren't thrift stores out to lunch sometimes with their pricing? $160! Glad you were able to get it for a decent price....I am all for spray painting it a fun colour.

  8. I always love a good 'determined thrifter' story! The chair is fabulous, and worth every penny, I can already picture it in your space!

  9. Way to go! You can't go wrong with that type of chair.

I want some wicker chairs upstairs in our house. After looking online at Maine Cottage and some other sites, I've decided to look at thrift and consignment stores.

  10. What fun to be able to get something that you had your eye on for so long! Makes it even more fun! And that fact that it is an up and coming trend is pretty sweet too :) Can't wait to see what you do with it - the green of course looks totally like you!

  11. It was meant for you! :) Can't wait to see what you do with it.

  12. Hey, Jennifer! I loved your thrifting story and the rabbit trail as well! Great find!

  13. THAT is an awesome story. Makes the end result that much sweeter knowing the "agony" you went through over it. Crazy how you ended up with it! :)

I can picture a fun color on it (or classy black) for sure.

    Sorry, Dave.

  14. I love vintage rattan furniture. I would have snapped this up too! :D
