March 2014 - Dimples and Tangles

It's FRIIIII-DAAAAAY!  Yippee!  And, since it's the last Friday of the month, it's time for our Best of the Nest Link Party!

In looking over my projects from the past month, I think my favorite one was my set of new green pillows where I showed you the easy way to put a zipper in a pillow.

My co-hosts were hard at work this month too!  Kris turned a handy organizer found at HomeGoods into a functional charging station, and you'll have to check out the smart idea she discovered to plug in all of those chargers!

Kris @ Driven by D├ęcor

Lisa searched high and low for 6 side chairs to use with her newly refinished dining table, and her persistence paid off with this lovely set from the Salvation Army.  Well, they weren't too lovely to start with, but now that she's worked her magic they are beautiful and functional for her family.

Pam found yet another amazing piece on Craigslist, then updated her new settee with some stylish new upholstery.

So, we want to know...what have you been up to this month?  Link up your best project from March!  You only need to link up on one blog, and your post will show up on all four blogs.  And don't forget, even if you aren't a blogger you can still participate.  Just post a photo on Instagram and be sure to tag at least one of the hosts and use the hashtag #bestofthenestparty (note...we altered the hashtag just a bit from last month).

There are just a few guidelines to remember...
*Link to your specific post, not your home page.
*Please make sure that your project is from THIS month (March).
*Only ONE link per person!
*Please link back to one of the hosts in your post.  Only those with a link will be considered for a feature!  You may include a text link or use the button below.
*Spread some comment love - please visit and comment on at least two other links in the                    party.

We'll be around to visit you and choose a few of our favorites to feature next Friday, so we'd love for you to stop back by.  Can't wait to see what you have to share.  Have a great weekend friends!

Thank you all so very much for your kind comments here, on Facebook, and on Instagram yesterday!  I was overwhelmed at all of your encouragement about my page in Good Housekeeping.  I've known it all along, but you all confirmed that you are truly the nicest readers a girl could ask for!

My Craigslist has been SO spotty lately, but I made a purchase last weekend!  For a while I've been thinking that it's about time to replace our living room sofa.

It's a great Rowe sleeper, but it's over 10 years old and the upholstery is still good, but getting a bit tired.  My plan was to move it into our Office/TV/Playroom (and sell the older leather sofa that was in there) and find a new one for the living room.  I had something classic, comfortable, and possibly velvet in mind.

So, this one had been listed for over a month.  The first time I saw it I liked it, but didn't immediately inquire.  By the time I thought more about it after a while, I couldn't find the listing again, so I thought it was gone.  Then, about two weeks ago, it appeared again!  After an unsuccessful first attempt to contact the seller, we finally touched base and arranged a time to see it.

I had already done some searching for some inspiration for reupholstering it, so I knew with the good bones of the shape it could look pretty great.  We worked the puzzle to fit it in our Suburban and brought it home.

I'm shopping for fabric over the next week or so, and then I hope to get it done before too long.  I've tried my hand at a few smaller upholstery projects, but I don't really want to take this one on.  I want it to be perfect and I don't want it to take forever like I know it would if I did it!  I would also like to check into adding some down filling to the seat cushions, or perhaps completely replacing the cushions with down filled ones.

Here are some images I came across while considering my purchase.  Can you see the potential?

(If you'd like to pin any of these images, please make one click on the link below the photo and pin from the original source.  Thanks!)

This one is probably my favorite...

LOVE the moody, rich color in the photo and in theory but I don't know if I can commit to something that dark.  (I have 2 dark leather chairs in the same space to consider.)  I'll probably end up with something close to the same neutral shade as the sofa I already have, but I'm still open!

I've never owned furniture with velvet upholstery.  Any suggestions?  Any certain TYPE of velvet I need to make sure I'm looking for?  I've heard good things about the indoor/outdoor velvet and think that might be smart.  Thoughts?

Last year when Good Housekeeping published one of my photos, I guess they liked what they saw, because they invited me back!  So the next time you're waiting in line at Target or Wal-mart, or sitting in a waiting room, check out page 137 of the April issue.

Don't you just love that cover?  I honestly was so surprised when they asked to see more photos of my home and were interested in featuring it for their monthly Show & Tell column.

If you're a regular reader, you know things have changed since that Dining Room photo was taken.  Or rather, I finished the Dining Room!

And they were very interested in the botanical gallery wall but it wasn't photographing well with the kitchen table that's normally there, so it was fun to play around with the furniture in there.

Also, they have very kindly added a few more photos on their website!  You can start here and proceed through a short slide show.

I'm so grateful to the nice people at Good Housekeeping for including me in their beautiful publication.  If you haven't picked one up in a while, it really is one of the premier women's magazines with lots of interesting articles that cover a wide variety of topics.  I guess that's why it's been around for well over 100 years!

In other's already almost the end of the month!  Our Best of the Nest Link Party will be back on Friday, so get your best project from March ready to link up!

Hi friends, and happy Monday!  I'm thrilled to be partnering up with some of the nicest, most talented ladies in the blog world to talk about Spring Decor Trends today.   I'll be sharing 7 things that are really catching my eye right now.   And, at the end of this post, there's a little treat for you!

1)  SAVING MONEY... my absolute favorite trend that's always in style! No matter what the season, I'm always looking for a bargain.  I hardly ever buy things for full price, and I'm so happy to let you know about today.  Basically, it's a website that shares discounts that can be applied when shopping online at your favorite stores.  I am becoming more and more hooked on shopping online, and I'm sure that I'll never make another purchase without checking for a discount at again!

So, what should you considering purchasing for Spring now that you'll be saving all of that money???

2) BOLD COLORS- That's a big surprise coming from me, huh?  But, I'm seeing more and more color in interiors, and I love it!  And recently, my kitchen got a huge dose of my favorite color with a new KitchenAid Canopy Green Mixer.

Isn't it a beauty?  I've wanted one of these mixers for years, but hadn't seen this color until a few weeks ago.  It reeled me in hook, line, and sinker!  Once I found my dream mixer online, I checked for Amazon coupon codes that would bring me even more savings.

3) FLORALS- Once again, the bolder with brighter colors, the better!  And if it happens to have a watercolor look to it, snatch it right up!

4) GOLD- Yes, gold has been back in style for a while, but I don't think it's going away anytime soon!  I'm especially crushing on this new gold flatware that I recently found an awesome deal on at a local store, but you can find it online here.  Metallics are hot in home decor, and it's even better if you mix different tones.

5) BLUE AND WHITE- It's EVERYWHERE right now!  Last week I was in a premier home store in Kansas City, and I couldn't look anywhere without seeing a beautiful blue and white piece.  I'm especially in love with Blue Willow dishes and would like to own a set some day, but for now I'm thankful for my Mom who let me borrow some of hers.

6) MIX AND MATCHED PATTERNS- Just go for it!  Make sure that you have a few colors or patterns that relate to each other, but they don't necessarily have to "match." Pillows are also such an easy way to mix and match.  Try mixing different scales of a floral, a pattern or stripe, and an animal print.  Or, put a solid in there too if you're not quite brave enough for all of that.  And while we're at it, the mix is even better with a few different textures thrown in.

7) FRESH TASTES- Finally, Spring has me ready for light, tasty, fresh foods!  My new mixer made the best lemon squares ever...I'll share the recipe with you soon (see recipe here!).

All of these products that I've linked to today are from Amazon, so if you're shopping make sure to remember to check for Amazon coupon codes and codes for your other favorite online stores at before you hit that "check-out" button!

So, are you ready to embrace one of these trends and try something new for your home? is offering a chance to win a $150 e-gift card to West Elm or Target!  And, even if you don't have one of those stores locally, the best part is that you can shop online, save even more money by using the website, and have your items shipped directly to your home!  Just use the handy Rafflecopter below to enter.

We've returned from our Spring Break road trip but are still enjoying a few more care-free schedule-free days at home this week.  It's been fantastic!

For whatever reason, it's taken me this long to finally get my house totally put back together after Christmas.  Just sharing some photos today...   The Entry is pretty much back to normal with the clam shell orchid arrangement.

I did a simple winter mantle in January, but added a bit more to it, including my faux orchid that you saw yesterday.

I won this custom Ramsign piece (our wedding year) from a giveaway at Vintage Gwen a while back.  I'm planning to use it in my bedroom but really like it hanging out on our mantle for now.

I definitely like kelly green accents, and added a few more pops of the color.  You already saw my new green and greek key trim pillows:

Here I painted an old tray to carry the color across the room:

And you know I brought the green into our Breakfast Nook with a fresh coat of paint on my lanterns:

The dining room has plenty of green, and like I told you on Monday, I struggle with what to keep on my tables.  When all else fails, throw some things on a tray and call it good!

Well, I guess I got everything done just in time, since today is the official first day of Spring!  I'm sure that we all agree it can't come fast enough this year.  I'm going to enjoy my kids for their last days off, but I'll see you on Monday for a fun Spring collaborative post with some of my favorite blog friends!
