Hi friends, welcome back for my Week 2 update for the One Room Challenge! This Spring my husband and I are finally tackling a long overdue Master Bathroom Makeover. If you missed the proof of our dire renovation need, be sure to see all of the "before" photos in last week's post. After scarring you eyeballs with those beauties, let's focus on prettier things this week as I share our Master Bathroom design plan with you!
I believe I mentioned last week that part of the reason this makeover has taken so long to happen is totally my fault, I just could not decide on a direction I wanted to go with the design. It didn't help that I love so many different styles and designs, I just couldn't make up my mind! I knew I wanted it to be classic, timeless, and traditional, but for me that includes a huge dose of color as well. After years of browsing blogs, Pinterest (follow my Bathrooms inspiration board here), and magazines for inspiration, my creative wheels starting turning and things finally fell in to place. So without further delay... here's the plan!
I think the green vanity was from an HGTV Magazine makeover and was the first piece to my puzzle. Pairing the playful blue and white wallpaper with it was a decision that quickly followed, and everything else kind of fell into place over time. I tried to represent all of the parts on this board as close as I could get them to what I'm actually using, but a few things might still change as I go along like fabric selections and accessories. It's not represented but walls that aren't getting wallpaper will be painted white.
Let me explain the pieces a bit by zone-
SINK VANITIES/TUB WALL- Both sink vanities will be painted Behr Crown Jewel and new countertops will be white quartz. This amazing wallpaper courtesy of Hygge & West will be installed only on the wall behind the sinks, including around the window. My board doesn't show the true scale of the paper, see an example in Ariel's darling home here. A new, streamlined whirlpool tub will be installed and I'll trim out the front side with decorative molding. It's not shown on the design board, but remember there's a large window over the tub so I'll do some sort of window treatment there, still deciding on that. We'll use a marble look porcelain tile on the floors and I'll use brass accents for the vanity lighting, hardware, and faucets.
WALK-IN SHOWER- Walls will be a slightly textured white oversized subway tile with light gray grout. Floors will be a white hex tile with a flower pattern using a gray tile periodically for the flower center. A niche will be added for bath products, and faucets and tile trim will be brass. Also on that wall, we'll be removing the sliding mirrored closet doors and replacing them with a single regular door.
LINEN CABINET AND SHOE CABINET- Remember that the previous built in hamper against the shower will be removed and we'll add floor to ceiling cabinets with adjustable shelves there. The existing linen cabinet will get built up to the ceiling, and both cabinets as well as the front tub trim will be painted bright white with gold hardware.
WATER CLOSET- Similar to what I did in the Powder Bath, I'll add a lower molding treatment all around the water closet walls and paint it all out white. Above will be more of the blue and white paper circling the entire room. We'll switch out the light fixture in there with a gold lotus pendant that I've had in storage, and I've got some lattice frames to use for artwork in there. I'm planning to do a chippendale style design with the molding, and will do the same design on the front of the tub.
Now for some audience participation... there are a few decisions that I need to make soon but I need help!
A few things to consider- I'll find some sort of patterned rug, I don't want a solid color and not "bath mat" type rugs. Something that can handle getting wet or toothpaste dropped on it but a bit more stylish.
I would LOVE to do one big rug in here. The room is so long and narrow though, 5' would be the max width it could handle. A 5x7 rug would basically just fit in front of the tub, with a few inches hanging over in front of each vanity. Ideally I would want it longer than that- like 9ish feet long but obviously that's not a standard size (not really interested in getting something custom bound, although I might need to look into that if I get desperate). Also, we really like the warmth/comfort of a rug under our feet while standing at the sink, so one big rug doesn't really give us that.
Another option is two smaller rugs, one in front of each vanity. Our vanities are different sizes so that makes it a little tricky. This would be my second choice, but I've never figured out how to make one rug big work. That's why I need your help! Anyone else have the same issue? Any solutions?
I recently found this chandelier at a vintage shop and scooped it up not knowing where I planned to put it, but the more I thought about it I'd really like to use it in the bathroom.
However, I can't decide where to put it. I wish my photo was pulled back a bit further, but I can't decide if I should center it in the room or hang it over the tub. Either way, we'll remove the two recessed eyeball lights currently over the tub window.
My gut feeling is that it would be more balanced to just center it in the room, especially since the tub isn't very wide I feel like it would be squished against that side. But, I'd love to hear your thoughts! (And yes, it will definitely be getting a spray paint job, not sure on color yet!)
So with all of that said, next week I'll start sharing demo and tile work, hope to see you then!
Be sure to check out the others participating in this round of the ORC, there will be some amazing makeovers to follow along with for sure!

Love your ideas! I agree that the chandelier would be good in the center of the room. With the rug - could you use a stair runner? Maybe a way to combine the two ideas? I'm certainly no expert, but it popped into my head while I was reading.
ReplyDeleteI thought about that but runners are generally 2 1/2' wide which would be too skinny. 4-5' wide would be ideal.. such a dilemma! Thanks for your input!
DeleteI'm torn on the rug situation. My first thought was a long runner centered in the room but that wouldn't be comfy near the vanities and really would mostly be for looks. I think you have to decide if it's a must to have them at your feet while standing at the vanity-- if not, I think large in the middle is the way to go.
ReplyDeleteThe chandelier will look good in either place but if you do rugs that gravitate toward the left of the room then I would center the chandy so the space doesn't feel like everything is on one side?? Unless whatever is happening on the right wall area really packs a punch! Can't wait to see how this ends up. So excited for the kelly green vanities!

I'm really leaning towards one large rug, the size is just the problem. I know something will work out, though! Good point on the rug/chandy placement, I'm leaning towards centered. Thanks Rachel!
DeleteChandelier in the middle of the bathroom looks more balanced. One long rug makes for a better look and I like the idea of Stephanie by using a stair runner.
ReplyDeleteLoving the green and that wallpaper! I’m super jealous that you have such amazing space to work with. Living with the tiniest bathroom over here, lol
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer-- I love your design ideas. You might want to check out Flor for rug ideas. They offer square tiles so that you can design your own look and size. I also like the idea of rugs under each sink area and have a separate bath mat style rug that you could pull out when you take a bath which is probably not every day. I would hate to install beautiful new flooring only to have 90% covered with a rug. Can't wait to see what you decide.
ReplyDeleteThis will be beautiful coordinating with your bedroom! I'm contemplating a bathroom re-do...what's a ballpark budget I can "look forward to?" :P
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see this bathroom completed! I have done custom bound area rugs for clients and yes they are more expensive, but when you're working with an unusual size, it becomes a good option. You may be able to stumble upon a great remnant and the binding really doesn't cost that much. I think centering your chandelier is the best balance for your room. If you decide to use over your tub, you might want to first check building codes in your area. Many will not allow any hanging fixture over a tub. Something crazy about the chance that some not-too-smart person would change a bulb while standing in water HAHA.
ReplyDeletePlease keep us posted on your progress!
Another thought about your area rug...there are a number of trellis patterned area rugs in varied colors available on a lot of sites. You could buy the length you need and have the width cut and then bound. This should be less expensive then first buying a broadloom and having it cut and bound. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteThat is a brilliant idea!! I’ve had a remnant bound before but never would have thought of that. Thank you!
DeletePlease consider that building codes might limit the placement of your chandelier for safety. National Electrical Code calls for over-tub fixtures to be 8 feet high or 3 feet outside the tub zone. Looking forward to seeing your progress!
ReplyDeleteDidn’t think of that, thanks! I think centered is the winner anyway.
DeleteI second the FLOR rec. Our house is 100 yrs old, and the 21' hall isn't today's standard width, so we couldn't find a runner close to the right size. I used FLOR tiles and have appreciated the flexible options and how easy to clean they are.
ReplyDeleteThanks Julie, I’ll look into them!

ReplyDeleteI was just going to say code won’t allow that chandelier over the tub but someone beat me to it. What if you leave the canlights and center the chandelier in the middle of room. Less to patch up. Love the colors you have chosen. My master is in similar shape I’m afraid!
We definitely need updated can lights if we leave them but that might be a good idea to leave them in addition to the chandelier.
Delete2 rugs, centered chandy. Can't wait to see it progress!
ReplyDeleteI love your design, the color choices of course! About the chandelier my opinion is that it will be at the center due to then long bath you have. Well, the rugs, jumm... I let you that deal 🤣 Can't wait to see the final results. You are magic!!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! I love the plans! I think centering the chandelier looks best, but I don’t have any suggestions for rugs. Can’t wait to see how it all turns out!
ReplyDeleteI have been waiting all week to see these plans and I love them! My OCD self thinks the chandelier would be best in the center of the room. The rug is tricky....
ReplyDeleteI agree to center the chandelier! If it were me, I'd do small rugs at the sinks. In a bathroom, I get grossed out carpet. I only have small rugs that I can throw in my washing machine. Too many yucky things in a bathroom!
ReplyDeleteGreat point!
DeleteI absolutely love the entire plan. I can't wait to see the finished product. I have to say I enjoy every blog I read, but yours is certainly the most colorful and interesting. I decorate with a lot of blue and white, and you have inspired me to add more punches of color. I know whatever you do about the rug and the chandelier will be primo. Thank you for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteJennifer, I’ve followed your blog for years but never have commented. I had been waiting for your week 2 ORC post. Your bedroom has been an inspiration to me and I couldn’t wait to see your plans for the master bath. It’s going to be stunning. I’m so glad you’ve decided to hang that great chandelier in the center of the room. I think everywhere you can break up that long narrow expanse sight line the better. For that reason I wouldn’t vote for one long rug. I have a suggestion, you do vignettes so well,I hope you are able to design a few open shelves in your two storage cabinets. I think it would add a lot of interest plus again break up narrow rectangles. Your wallpaper selection will look smashing !!
ReplyDeleteI love the green vanity! I'm so torn on the chandelier... I think it would look amazing centered in the room but the other half thinks it would look great over the tub. I'm sorry I'm no help! But I'm excited about your plans!
ReplyDeleteI ran into the multiple rug issue on my Master Bathroom ORC (Fall 2016)a couple of years ago. I would have theoretically needed 4 "bath mats" - 2 sinks, 1 shower and 1 for the garden tub. In a perfect world the tub and shower would have been demoed and become one but we had to work with what was there.I ended up using a seagrass runner from Ikea to run in front of the vanities and bought a lightweight bath mat that hangs behind door and isn't seen to throw down and (hopefully) hang back up when we shower. Then I used a fun indoor/outdoor zebra rug that looks like a hooked wool rug to intersect with the runner and works in front of the tub. Between the two not traditional bath rugs in there we have the floor covered! It looks great and neither one looks "bathroom-y" at all!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful plans, Jennifer! My suggestions for the rug would be to either use rectangular rugs in front of the vanities and a neutral oval shaped one in the center or do a custom-sized single rug. For the chandelier, I bet over-the-tub might not meet code. I, personally, love the look of a chandelier over the tub and plan to have one there when I redo my bathroom. If it won't meet code, I'll have the electrician place it in the center and then I'll swag it over the tub myself. 😁
ReplyDeleteJennifer, these are beautiful design plans and I can’t wait to see the finished product! I’m planning on using wallpaper in my powder bath soon, so this will definitely be some lovely inspiration for me to make that happen. We built our house four years ago and I was faced with the same dilemma with the chandelier in the master bath. Since my tub isn’t centered on the wall, I chose to hang mine in the center of the room with can lights over the tub, and I absolutely love it! I love that vintage chandelier as well. Good luck, I can’t wait for the reveal!!
ReplyDeleteCan you get 2 4x6 rugs and attach them 4' sides together? If it's a simple pattern it will look fine. (Thinking ikea black+white)
ReplyDeleteYou may want to look at vintage oushak rugs on Ebay, as they come in unusual sizes. We found a very muted one with a 4' width. Look under vintage runners. If you prefer no rugs at vanities, just wear your Ugg slippers and your feet will be warm:)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love this color palette and mood board- especially that green vanity! It's going to look so good!
ReplyDeleteI may be a little late on this but I was thinking a runner also. What about going to a carpet store and have them bind a rug the exact size you want it. It could be a patterned carpet or a soled with a lot of texture. Good luck. Can't wait to see it!
