Several of you guessed my latest project correctly!
I used my new botanical book for a fabulous gallery wall in the kitchen.
The pages are just about 9x11" and sweet Emily Clark tipped me off to some great budget-friendly frames at Michael's. They are 11x14" and come in a 2-pack for $7.99. I used a coupon and ended up getting each frame for about $3. Even though they are plastic frames, I think they look relatively high end, and the backs were super quick and easy to remove and put back together.
To remove the pages cleanly from the book, I used an X-Acto knife to cut the page while holding the spine open as far as possible. Once the page was out I used my scrapbooking paper trimmer to clean up the cut edge a bit.
Before framing the prints I spread them all out on the floor and worked with them until I found an arrangement that I liked. Then, I took pictures so I would remember the order to put them in when ready to hang them on the wall.
The pictures are mounted on a piece of white poster board...easy peasy!
The hardest part of the project was marking the wall, but even that was simpler than I thought it would be. It just involved some persistent work with a tape measure and my trusty laser level. I used two nails close to the top corners of each picture so they wouldn't get crooked on the wall every time the kids slam the back door. ;-)
I'm really loving the cleaner-but dramatic-look on this wall. As a reminder, here it was a few weeks ago:
and here it is today:
I hope your weekend is fun and productive! There's a pillow-making fest going on here, and, I'm behind on some e-mails. Promise I'll catch up this weekend!

Have to let you know I totally copied your wall art; picture for picture and used the exact same frames, I loved it so much. We have them hanging on a large wall in our living room-my family absolutely loves them. Thanks for the idea-sure hope you didn't copyright it!!!

Oh, Kate, I don't have your e-mail and can't contact you! Thank you so much! What a fantastic compliment. So glad you like your new arrangement. I'd love to see a picture sometime!
ReplyDeleteI found your beautiful and inspiring blog post when I was on a Google-image-searching spree! I can't remember the exact terms I used, but I had been searching for things like "botanic bug photos", "botanic insect decor" etc. As soon as I found yours, I pinned it to my "Bugs Botanic Kitchen" board and kept going back to it again and again.
ReplyDeleteI thought your wall was so tastefully done and looked really classy, so I took a shot at doing one on a big blank wall in our dining area, too. I used some botanic illustrations by John Abbot that I found online. We hung it up last night and I'm so, so happy with it! I need to tidy up the area before I post a picture, but when I do, I'll post a link to it in these comments.
Thanks for such a helpful post in how you created this! I love seeing appreciation for bugs (especially pollinators)! Your wall came out so beautifully.
I love this! I have just found your blog via the images of your porch on pinterest. I have been enjoying your blog so much. Your decor is fabulous! I love your before and afters too. If you don't already have a career in home decorating you really should consider one. I am one of your newest followers who is looking forward to seeing many more inspiring photos!
ReplyDeleteI hope it's not to late to ask a question. I just found your botanical wall and am IN LOVE! OK, here's the question. You said you mounted the pictures on white poster board (easy peasy), I feel like an idiot (or at least the obvious novice that I am!), but, how did you mount them? I suspect glue around the edges or in the corners would look amateurish. Mod podge ? (don't laugh). I want my wall to look just like yours, please help! :-)
ReplyDeleteLaura
PS here's another glaring example of how new I am to pinterest, blogs, etc. It's not obvious to me how I should include my email address for you. I hesitate to include it here for the world to see. Could you answer on your blog? I promise I'll be looking for it! Sheesh, I feel dumb.
Hi Laura! I've been in your same position. When I was first starting out just reading blogs I had no idea how everything worked! I still don't know that I do things the "right" way, so I believe for your e-mail to show up to me you have to register when you comment. That means you need to select another option rather than "anonymous". You can do that through signing up for a google account, or I have lots of friends that have a blogger account who don't write a blog, they just use that to keep track of all of the blogs they follow. A blogger account is super easy to set up and free. If you do that your e-mail will be attached with all of your comments. Other than that, most bloggers have a "contact me" section where you can e-mail them directly, and then they will be able to reply to you. Thanks for asking, it's so frustrating for someone to ask a question and then have no way to contact them back!
DeleteOn the mounting, I used photo mounting squares called "Photo Splits". They are small square that are sticky on both sides. I just stuck one in each corner and pressed the photo down on the poster board. Sticky enough and they are nice and flat and smooth. They come in a square box and are in a roll inside, there's like 1000 in a box. Any craft store and even Wal-Mart should have them, and they are usually with the scrapbooking supplies.
I hope that all helps!
Wow! Yes it did! Thank you for being so generous with your time. I can't wait to get started. (I'm still anonymous but I'll follow your directions right now!)
DeleteI love both looks, I have gotten so many ideas from your blog today. Your look is so high end, but I love that it didn't cost a ton. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteHow have I not found you before this? OMG, I love this!
ReplyDeleteLove these prints!! Do you mind my asking, where did you find the drapes. LOVE!! Sherry
