MY FIVE FAVORITE WAYS TO MIX OLD AND NEW

Welcome to My Five Favorites today! Pam from Simple Details, Lisa from Shine Your Light, Kris from Driven by Decor and I are all thrilled to share with you today.  I'm so excited about our theme this month because my decorating style and the pieces in my home are all about the mix of old and new furniture and accessories.  When used appropriately, I think older pieces have a certain way of bringing personality, interest, and character to a space with a collected feel that truly can't be achieved with all new items.

We're happy to have Melanie from My Sweet Savannah as our guest host today.  Her home exterior is one of my long time favorites, I mean how good can it get when you have a lake and wooded area adjoining your property?  Fantastic!  Melanie has a casual, collected style and a definite knack for incorporating old finds into her decor while maintaining a fresh, inviting design.

FURNITURE

If you've been a reader any time at all you might have picked up on the fact that I love unique second hand vintage furniture.  I update older pieces for a new look one of three ways- either with paint, by changing the fabric, or just by making sure that the piece is styled in an updated way.

Old dresser mixed with new lamps and rug-

Old chest mixed with modern art and plant-

Old China Cabinet updated with color-

Old mirror updated with paint and mixed with new sconces-

Old console table mixed with new fabric-

WALL ART

I think artwork is always a fantastic opportunity to mix new and old together.    Adding older pieces into gallery walls always gives a more interesting, more collected look.  And all the better if the older pieces have some family history or sentimental value!

The shadow box was mine as a girl (my Dad made it) and we mixed it in along with a few other vintage pieces for my daughter's gallery wall.

Other than the actual artwork, I like a mix of old and new for the frames themselves.  I tend to mix in detailed vintage frames right along with newer ones that have more modern, cleaner lines.

LIGHTING

Whether it's a vintage chandelier mixed in with a more modern room design or simply a good vintage lamp makeover, it's so simple to have a good mix of old and new lighting in your home.

Here's a peek of the vintage chandelier in the breakfast nook mixed with the new pendants in the adjoining kitchen-

Here I mixed an old clock turned ceiling medallion with a chandelier that has clean lines, then added round bulbs to make it more current-

Old lamps given new life with a bold color and new shades-

TABLETOP PIECES

Setting the table is probably my absolute favorite opportunity to mix old and new! Vintage linens can be mixed with newer dishes and glassware, or vice versa.  Or put fresh flowers in an older container for the centerpiece. Or mix in old and newer accessories (candleholders, vessels, knick knacks, etc.) for the centerpiece. Such an easy way to experiment, be creative, and use what you have.

Vintage milk glass  and silverware mixed with newer dishes, textiles, and centerpiece decorations-

Vintage brass mixed with new crystal-

A mix of new and old dishes, old flatware, centerpiece pups, and tumblers, and new textiles-

ACCESSORIES

Lastly, decorative accessories are the perfect place to mix old and new.  I think the key is to have a good combination of both.  Make sure there are some fresh pieces mixed in with older so that your vignette or table decor looks updated but interesting.

The Reader's Digest volumes of the 70's, vintage brass and gumball machine mixed with newer pieces-

Old champagne bucket, lamp, and sconces mixed with newer pottery and art-

Old coffee table mixed in with new accessories-

I left this vintage dresser alone except for some touch-ups, but mixed it with new lamps and modern accessories for an updated look.  I also used a different mirror than the dresser came with for a mix of old+new.

  2. So many fantastic ideas Jennifer. I love the idea of mixing the frames rather than the artwork. Brilliant.
