ONE ROOM CHALLENGE- GIRL'S BEDROOM- FINALIZING DETAILS {WEEK 4}

Yes, it's Week 4 of the One Room Challenge and I'm still finalizing details!!  Shouldn't that be happening in Week 2 or so? Or before the challenge even started?? Eeek! #iworkbestunderpressure

If you're joining me for the first time today, welcome! I'm making over my teenage daughter's room and you can catch up on Week 1 (Before Photos) here, Week 2 (Design Plan) here, and Week 3 (Paint and Ceiling Fan) here.

Let's begin today by me telling you a few things that have changed since the original design plan.  Here's a refresher-

First of all, we switched gears from the emerald green color scheme.  We went together to pick out fabric for her headboard, and she really wanted kelly green instead of emerald.  No argument from me (other than we'll have 2 green headboards in the house!).  I'm using this duck canvas fabric from Joann's (pretty sure this is the same fabric).  It's much heavier (and less expensive) than the linen that I used in my room so i'm hoping it's not too difficult to work with.  I'll use it for her bedskirt too.  We're starting on the headboard today!

That's the headboard fabric with the curtain fabric which I haven't shown you yet. I got the last of it several months ago on clearance at Hobby Lobby.  I can't find it online and don't know the pattern name, I only know that the brand is Mill Creek.  I finished the curtains yesterday...yay!

I was thrilled to find a large 36" mirror at Homegoods for above her dresser .  I originally wanted a simple round frame but they only had this one with the beading along the edge.  It's growing on me though, and if I keep it there will definitely be some gold spray paint in it's future.

I've been on the hunt for an end of the bed bench (vintage or secondhand!).  A pair of these popped up on Facebook Marketplace for a steal, the tops are badly stained but they're really sturdy and  easy enough to recover.  I didn't realize, however, that they're very low- only about 16" tall.  They're too wide to use both of them at the end of the bed, so I'll just use one if we decide to go ahead with this one.  I'm still on the lookout for something better before I commit to this one. These would actually make cute ottomans for a pair of wide club chairs!

I mentioned that my daughter and I were debating on what to do with the bamboo dresser...paint or keep it wood... and I think she won.  I like the idea of a warm wood tone in the room, I just really like how those particular bamboo pieces look painted!  Oh well, I need to touch up a few spots and hopefully figure out a way to remove the decals on the front of the doors.  I'm also undecided about what to do with the hardware.  The small handles on the middle doors are metal, but all the drawer handles are wood.  I naturally lean towards painting the hardware gold, but I'm not sure how that would look against the wood (although Bethany's is really pretty!).  Most of the bamboo dressers on Pinterest are painted so that wasn't much help for inspiration, but I did come across this pin last night (my exact dresser) and think it's interesting how they stripped the finish to more of a natural wood, and noticed that they left the hardware alone.

One big piece to the puzzle that finally came together yesterday was an accent fabric.  Since we shifted from deeper jewel tones to brighter colors (although not too many, she doesn't want a ton of color), I needed to find one pattern to tie everything together and introduce another color or two.  With the help of sweet local designer friend, I finally found this beauty.  It's SO perfect... I absolutely love it and want to steal it for my bedroom!  #watchoutkid  The colors are a bit bolder in person.  The green is perfect, it plays well with the black and white, and the watercolor feel gives me a little bit of a modern vibe I was looking for.  Now... what color to pick for a few small complementing accents???  I'm leaning towards a soft pink or blue.

I added some blush pink lamps to the design board before landing on this floral fabric, but I think we're going to change the lamp color.  I'm finalizing that for sure today and will share those with you next week.

Lastly, I'm coming up empty on a rug that I love.  I'm leaning towards one that I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on, but I'll let you know next week what I end up doing for that.

Now, to check in with the to-do list.  I doesn't seem like I got too much done last week, in my defense I was out of town and working on a volunteer project for 4 of those days... I can't wait to tell you about that soon!  However, I did accomplish a few tangible projects, and really nailed down lots of details that hadn't been decided yet...that's half the battle!

I got the nightstands painted a few days ago.  It pained me to paint over the red but the white is growing on me!  Since it was a small project, I used this spray paint which I absolutely love for small furniture.  It's the same kind that I used when I painted them red, so I did not prime them or anything this time, just painted right over it.  This post has all the details and tips from when I painted them the first time.

    Thinking about those decals... The piece is amazing, painted or unpainted! I wonder about treating the door and drawer insets with a removable wallpaper product in either a green or black/white pattern- maybe a small cane? Ohh.. or what about a natural grass cloth? That way the piece isn't permanently transformed.. you get the pop of color, your daughter gets the overall warmth of wood, and you both get NO DECALS! Plus, those wooden handles might make more of a statement backed by something other than the wood tone!
