STYLING TIPS FOR SPRING TOUR

Today I'm so happy to have been invited by  Randi of Randi Garrett Designs and Jennifer of Decor Gold Designs to share five Styling Tips for Spring with you.  Now that the calendar has hit March 1, it feels like it's truly time to get things spruced up for Spring around here!  If you're taking the tour and stopping by from Citrine Living, Welcome!

Today I'm sharing 5 tips from my home that I always consider when decorating for Spring.  Although my Spring decor might change slightly from year to year, these suggestions are tried and true for giving me new inspiration each year.  I hope these images and tips will help inspire you in your Spring decorating too!

I'm sure I use this tip for every season, but my favorite way to usher in a new season is to bring in  greenery, flowers, and nature from outdoors.  Nothing gives a home life like bringing the outdoors in!

I recently picked up these beauties from Trader Joes and removed the heavy pots they came in (leaving them in their small plastic pots).  I placed 3 together snugly in an old plastic bowl, and then slipped it in the large decorative blue and white bowl, covering the top with reindeer moss.  Such an easy, dramatic centerpiece!  Have you tried orchids?  They last quite a white giving you a bang for your buck vs. fresh cut flowers that only last a week or so.  For me, I've found the best way to care for them is to keep them in a bright location and I give each plant one dixie cup full of water per week.  When the blooms eventually die, I keep the leaves as is and replace the stems with good faux blooms... it's pretty easy to pass off as real!  See my faux/real orchid arrangement here, and a convincing completely faux orchid arrangement here.

Another trick I like to use in Spring is to buy plants intended for outside landscaping and use them indoors for a few weeks.  Often it's still a bit chilly when the prettiest plants start arriving at garden centers, so I can keep them warm and happy mixed in with my decor inside until the nights are consistently warm enough to relocate and plant them outside.

Be sure to keep an eye out for natural accents that go beyond flowers to use in your home.  This abandoned bird's nest makes a pretty seasonal vignette under a glass dome.

Spring is a great time to try something new in your home. Whether it be a piece of furniture, a new lamp, or just incorporating a new color you could change the look of your space with one different piece or slightly different direction.  Case in point, I have absolutely no yellow elsewhere in my bedroom, but these bright cheery pillows fit right in and really perk things up!

Last Spring I tried using a new color in my Entry with this new hot pink rug, and I loved it so much that more and more hot pink has slowly been creeping into my living area over the past year.

As always, pillows are a great way to experiment with a new color or pattern.  They don't take a big commitment, aren't a big investment, and if you just change out the covers are easy to store when not in use.

Even if you don't want to spread "Spring" around your entire home, choose one or two areas to make a seasonal focal point or vignette.  It could be your mantel, entry table, or coffee table.  Sometimes just a little touch or hint of the season is enough!

One of the best things you can do for your home to make it beautiful is give it a good- top to bottom- Spring Cleaning! Take the opportunity to choose a spot you've been neglecting to organize.  Even if you only do one area, that's better than what you started with!  One thing that is often overlooked but makes a huge difference is cleaning your windows, especially the exterior.  My husband stumbled across this glass cleaning video that's actually intended for a windshield, but he used the same method to clean all of our exterior windows and it made a huge difference! (He's a keeper!)  It's past time to do that again, so I need to take my own advice here.

Also, don't forget your decorative mirrors around your house.  My favorite way to clean those is Windex and a sheet of newspaper... what's yours?

Lastly, don't underestimate the power of a pretty table to set the mood for Spring in your home.  Whether it's for a dinner party, Easter, or just a weeknight family dinner, a beautiful table can be a festive way to welcome in the season.

  2. It's always a treat to see what you do in your home with color! Those yellow pillows are wonderful, and I THINK I saw a little yellow in that Change Mai Dragon (sp?) pillow adjacent.
You asked about glass cleaning. I discovered something cheap and easy as well as being a disinfectant. Cheapo bottles of rubbing alcohol! Just swap out the tops with a sprayer from your old Windex bottle or another household cleaner. They seem to fit the generic bottles of rubbing alcohol available in the grocery. I keep one under every sink or lavatory in the house as well as the garage and the back porch along with a roll of paper towel. Not only does it leave glass spot free, it works on the sinks, faucets and toilets. In the garage studio, it gets all manner of paint or glue off the fingers and cleans up the work area quickly. The glass tops on the tables outside get cleaned and disinfected, too.
