BEST OF THE NEST LINK PARTY {AUGUST}

It's Friiiiiiiiday!  Woo-hoo!  And even better, a holiday weekend!  How about we kick it off with some awesome projects and reading material for all of your extra lounging time?  Sounds like a good idea to me!

My favorite project from August was a recent one, my newly recovered fur ottomans.  If you missed that post, I used a fur coat that I had from the thrift store and a hefty dose of inspiration from a very pricey Horchow bench.

Although summer is nearing an end and we were all still super busy with activities, but my co-hosts managed to crank out some amazing projects this month.

Kris hung a set of vintage-inspired nesting crates on the wall in her kitchen.  In addition to adding some warmth and texture, they are super functional!  They double as storage for her high-use items for the table.  Smart and beautiful!

Lisa drew inspiration from a special trip with her husband, and made a vintage looking sign to represent one of their favorite vacation spots and all of the memories they've shared there.  I think it's the perfect addition to her gorgeous dining room! She also included a great tutorial for an easy way to transfer the custom graphics.

Pam got very creative (as usual!) and made some DIY artwork for some gallery wall frames...with fabric!  She proves once again that great design doesn't need to be complicated or expensive!

KEEPING A THRIFTY EYE OUT FOR...

Call me crazy, but if I came across just the right piece, I think I'd switch out my china cabinet.

I still love it, but this image has me dreaming of a slightly different style...

Some furniture is never safe for long around here...much to my hauling-back-and-forth husband's chagrin.  Let's just not tell him about this post.  OK?  OK!!

I don't know what my thing is with bamboo style furniture is lately, but I can't seem to get enough! See the proof here, here, here, and here.

If I did find the right piece, I still love the color enough that it would probably go green again!

Hope you guys have a great Thursday!  Remember to be checking in on the fabulous Blogger Stylin' Home Tours this week, and don't forget to check in tomorrow for this month's Best of the Nest Link Party!

BSHT: FAVORITE ROOM EDITION - OUR ENTRY

I am so thrilled and honored to be participating in my third home tour hosted by my friend, sweet Mama-to-Be Lindsay from The White Buffalo Styling Company.  She has assembled a first-rate group of bloggers that I am so privileged to be a part of.  Thank you Lindsay!  Did you catch all of the tours yesterday?  They were all crazy good!  This week is so much fun and I'm looking forward to seeing what all of the other favorite rooms are too.  If you're continuing on the tour today from This, That, and Life, or any of the other blogs, Welcome!  I'm so happy that you're here.

My current (it changes often) favorite "room" is our Entry.

But before I give you all the details, let's start from outside the Entry.  As an extension of our Entry, I also love our front porch.  I'm so thankful that the previous owner chose to use brick on the porch.  I buy 2 massive ferns from Lowe's every Spring, and they're worth every penny.  For whatever reason, they thrive in this spot and make a dramatic statement framing the front door.

After seeing Amy's cute front door makeover, I remembered that I had a wood monogram I could use on the porch (it didn't show up well on my front door with the glass so I hung it with a ribbon from the light), and she reminded me of an idea that I've had pinned forever to paint just the inside edge of a door with a pop of color for a little surprise.  Huh, that color just happened to be green for me...surprised?  ;)

We very recently repainted all of our living area to a lighter, brighter color (BM Manchester Tan at 25%).  Putting everything back where it belonged brought a good opportunity to change things up just a little bit.

If you've seen my Entry before, it's still similar, but I think the paint color makes such a huge difference, not to mention the new mirror!  Since the mirror is so large, I had to find a new home for the free antlers, but they'll still have a home somewhere.

I've furnished this area almost entirely with second hand finds and budget friendly items.  The dresser, chippendale chair, and most recently the mirror are all Craigslist bargains.  The lamps were from a thrift store and got a makeover, and the blue and white pieces are from Ross.

So there you go!  That's my current favorite... today.  My Dining Room is a close second, my Breakfast Nook comes in at third, and I would love for you to check out my entire home tour here!

If you missed any other of the favorite room tours today, here's a complete list so you can follow along:

Tomorrow, we'll kick off Day 3 with Home Stories A to Z.

HORCHOW INSPIRED FUR OTTOMANS {SUMMER STYLE SOIREE}

It's so hard to believe, but it's already time for this year's final Summer Style Soiree project!  Today, our inspiration is none other than the iconic James Dean.  To me, when I hear his name I automatically think... movie star, Hollywood, fame, glamour, and of course, a leather jacket.

Waaaay back in the Spring, I threw out a little dilemma and asked for suggestions from you guys, and you came through with some great ideas!  As a refresher or reminder, the topic of discussion was the ottomans that I've had for several years, and had covered with faux fur way back when.  It's been time to replace the now-matted down fur and I wanted to use a thrifted fur coat that I've had on hand.  I had enough to cover the tops, but couldn't figure out what to do with the sides. When I put out the call for ideas, a dear friend sent me these benches that she had seen at Horchow, and I knew it was the perfect solution!

So, when I thought about this month's project, James Dean + furry glam furniture + a bit of "leather" somehow naturally went together for me, and I knew these ottomans would fit the bill!

Here's how the ottomans looked before...

After stripping off the black fur, I gave the legs a fresh coat of gold spray paint.  For the sides, I measured and cut strips of leather-looking vinyl to wrap the sides.  Mine were about 9" tall, and I was able to cut two long strips and piece them together, so there were only seams on two of the corners.

Then, I trimmed around the leg leaving a 1/2" margin or so, then tucked that under to give a finished look.  I wrapped the side piece between the legs to the under side and hot glued it to the liner underneath.

On the top side of the vinyl strips, I just trimmed the corners so it would lay flat, and glued it down.  None of this would show so I wasn't too particular with it.

My fur coat was taken apart into the largest pieces possible, so I had the back, sleeves, and two front pieces to work with.  I laid them out like a puzzle on the stools to get the best coverage with what I had.  It worked out surprisingly well!  I used some extra pieces to patch odd empty spots here and there.  When everything fit together, I hot glued the edges of the fur down to secure everything.

Finally, I added the nail head trim.  It was very helpful to drill a small pilot hole for the nail head tacks. Without it, I was having trouble getting the tacks in straight without bending them.

This was definitely a designer "look for less" project!  I think I paid about $10 each for the stools, I used a yard of imitation leather (vinyl-$5 from Hancocks), had the nailhead trim on hand but it would have been around $10, and the $12 for the coat was money well spent.  By piecing it together I had just enough for both stools.  I removed the collar and pom pom tie and have used them around the house in other places, last Fall here and Christmas here.  I didn't have the pretty acrylic legs, but I like my price much better than Horchow's $1889 (for one) price tag!

I was so used to the black fur that I'm having to adjust to the lighter color, but I think it's a nice change.

Be sure to come back tomorrow!  All of my co-hosts will have their James Dean inspired projects posted, and the Link Party will be live at 7 a.m. EST.

If you missed my other Style Soiree projects this summer, you can catch up on them here!
